Abstract

The Yogyakarta Province has been funding dozens of short film projects to support the local film industry and preserve traditional values. Research on provincial film primarily emphasizes full-length films instead of short films that accurately represent the local culture. This article examines the construction of Yogyakarta cultural values in the local short film to foreground the traditional values contextualized in contemporary life. The local short films depict current social and cultural issues in Yogyakarta from the perspective of ordinary people (wong cilik) keen to bolster their dignity without resorting to violence as part of continuing negotiation for a local principle of a harmonious way of life (hamemayu hayuning bawana). The local short films portray the contextualization of the practice of traditional Javanese values in contemporary daily life.
