Abstract

The overpopulation of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) on Lombok Island has led to human-wildlife conflicts that are detrimental to the agricultural sector, disrupt the balance of terrestrial ecosystems, and increase the risk of zoonoses. This research aims to identify the causes of overpopulation, analyze the ecological and socio-economic impacts, and formulate realistic ecology-based conservation strategies that support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a case study approach, involving literature studies, contextual analysis of the Lombok region, and policy reviews. The research results indicate that wildlife feeding by tourists, habitat fragmentation due to land conversion, the high adaptability of the macaques, and the lack of natural predators are the primary causes of overpopulation. The resulting impacts include crop yield losses of up to 30-40% per season, habitat degradation, psychological distress among the community, and the potential transmission of zoonotic diseases such as rabies and herpes B. The recommended integrated conservation strategies include feeding bans, waste management, habitat restoration, limited sterilization, crop protection using wildlife-friendly infrastructure, compensation systems, and public education. These strategies directly contribute to SDG targets 15.5 (reducing habitat degradation) and 15.9 (integrating ecosystem values into regional planning). The conclusion of the study emphasizes that an integrated approach involving the community, government, and tourism operators is the key to the successful and sustainable management of human-wildlife conflicts in Lombok

Abstract

The increasing generation of household organic waste has become a serious challenge in supporting low-carbon development in regions experiencing rapid population growth, such as West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB). The low level of waste management causes most organic waste to end up in Final Disposal Sites (TPA), where it undergoes anaerobic decomposition and produces methane gas (CH₄), one of the Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) with a global warming potential 28–34 times higher than carbon dioxide (CO₂). This study aims to identify the magnitude of household organic waste generation, estimate methane (CH₄) emissions produced, and analyze its implications for regional low-carbon development. The method used is descriptive analysis with secondary data sources, using households as the main unit of analysis for organic waste generation. Data were obtained from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN-KLHK), NTB Low Carbon Development Planning documents (PRKBI), and the IPCC 2006 guidelines using the First Order Decay (FOD) approach. The results show that with a population of 5.73 million in NTB in 2025, household organic waste generation reaches approximately 769,489 tons/year with an estimated methane emission of ±38,474 tons CH₄/year or equivalent to ±1,077,272–1,308,116 tons CO₂e/year. The waste management rate of only 13.48% increases emissions risk from the waste sector, indicating that household organic waste management must be positioned as a strategic instrument in emission mitigation and in supporting low-carbon development in West Nusa Tenggara Province.

Abstract

West Nusa Tenggara Province (Nusa Tenggara Barat/NTB) has demonstrated a strong commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through various policies and strategic documents. However, among the many contributing sectors, the livestock sector—particularly cattle farming—has not received sufficient attention, despite its substantial contribution to GHG emissions in line with the increasing cattle population, which has exceeded 1.3 million heads. Improperly managed cattle manure contributes significantly to methane (CH₄) emissions, which have a much higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide (CO₂). This study aims to analyze the potential utilization of cattle manure as a biogas feedstock, estimate the amount of energy generated, and assess its contribution to GHG emission reduction in supporting the achievement of Net Zero Emissions (NZE) in NTB Province by 2050. The research employs a mixed qualitative and quantitative descriptive approach through literature review, secondary data analysis, and limited interviews with the NTB Provincial Office of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda). The results indicate that with 6,150 constructed biogas units utilizing approximately 12,300 cattle, the potential GHG emission reduction reaches 26,658.65 tons CO₂e per year, equivalent to about 0.625% of the total emission potential from the cattle livestock waste sector in NTB. This emission reduction is derived from methane (CH₄) emission avoidance and the substitution of fossil fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). In addition to climate mitigation benefits, biogas utilization provides economic advantages through household energy savings and supports the implementation of a circular economy by utilizing bio-slurry as organic fertilizer. Although the current level of biogas utilization remains relatively low compared to its potential, biogas technology has proven to be a strategic and sustainable solution for livestock waste management, renewable energy development, and climate change mitigation efforts in NTB Province.
