Abstract

ABSTRACT As part of Indonesian society, Chinese society prosseses unique custom and tradition. Although Chinese society has settled for centuries in Indonesian and has adapted to Indonesia culture, they still carry out their marriage ceremony called “cio tao”. The marriage sense for Chinese society is “xiao” i.e. the respect to their parent, ancestors and the welfare for both families. It is recognized that Chinese society in Indonesia can be classified into two groups, i.e. pure-blooded and half-bred. Both groups organize different marriage custom. Pure-blooded group still follow the traditional custom while the half-bred left the traditional custom and attached either to their religion or Western style. At the present time the Chinese society tends to follow the traditional style as the consequence of the decree of president Abdurachman Wachid No.6/2000.
