AbstractThis research aims to find out and explain the students’ critical thinking ability observed from explanation aspect in solving proportion problems of junior high school students in academic year 2016/2017. Method used in this research was descriptive in survey form. Subject in this research was the seventh grade of SMP Santa Monika Kubu Raya with a number of 26 students. Data collection technique used was test and interview. The test results of students’ critical thinking ability observed from explanation were varied; some were high while the others were medium. The test results also showed that there was still a problem in the stating result and justifying procedure indicators. The problem was proven when the students faced the difficulties in writing the necessary information and the reason of a problem solution even though most of them knew the correct solution. The stating result indicator reaches 58.97% with medium categorized; the justifying procedure indicator reaches 66.67% with high categorized; and the presenting argument indicator reaches 41.35% with medium categorized.Keywords: Critical thinking Ability, Explanation, ProportionÂ
