Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is often called the mother of all diseases where if not managed properly it will cause many complications, especially in the feet, namely peripheral neuropathy. Indonesian health survey data in 2023 showed that 10.5% of disabilities occurred due to DM, so the need for preventive measures. One of the preventive measures is foot massage therapy. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of foot massage therapy on peripheral neuropathy in diabetes mellitus patients. Methods: The research design used a quasi-experimental and the one group pretest posttest design. The independent variable was foot massage therapy and the dependent variable was diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The study was conducted at PKU Muhamamdiyah Banjarnegara Hospital in December 2024. A sample of 34 diabetes mellitus patients was selected through a purposive sampling technique with the criteria of being diagnosed with DM by a doctor, composmentis, able to communicate, not receiving other non-pharmacological therapy, and no wounds or fractures in the feet. The research instrument used a 10gram monofilament test. Foot massage therapy was carried out for 4 days with a duration of 10 minutes per day. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon test. Results: The monofilament test showed a difference in foot sensitivity in people with diabetes before and after foot massage with a p-value of 0.000 (p<0.05). Conclusion: Foot massage therapy reduced symptoms of diabetic peripheral neuropathy in this study.
