Abstract

This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The sample selection was using purposive sampling technique. Therewere three physics text books sampled in this study. The results of the data analysis showed that the category of scientificknowledge was the category of scientific literacy that was mostly presented in the physics textbook for class XI at 57.60%.Then the category of investigation of the nature of science was 19.30%, and the category of science as a way of thinkingwas 14.10%. The category of scientific literacy that appeared the least was the category of interaction between science, technology and society at 8.90%. The mean agreement coefficient by the researcher and two observers was 0.88% and0.90%. The conclusion obtained in this study is that the XI grade physics textbook used in SMA Negeri in Pematangsiantarhas described the category of scientific literacy with a very good category. However, class XI physics text books generallyemphasize the aspects of scientific knowledge and very less present aspects of the interaction between science, technologyand society. Therefore it was necessary to understand the theme of scientific literacy and its indicators as a basis forchoosing books as teaching materials.
