Abstract

There are many students who have not mastered the concept of group theory well. For that reason, the researcher intends to describe the conceptual understanding of group theory based on student’s mathematical abilities. The implementation of this research begins with the explained Group Theory to the students, clasically. Next the researcher tested the students about the group, to find out the mathematical abilities of students. Then, it will be matched with the GPA values of students to choose the research subject. The research subjects, who were selected, were then given test questions that had been validated by experts. After working on the test, the subjects were interviewed to get more detailed data. The results of this study are students with high mathematical abilities have a very good criteria of conceptual understanding of group theory. Students with medium mathematical abilities are having good conceptual understanding of group theory. Students with low mathematical abilities are not good conceptual understanding of group theory.
