An Analysis of Elicitation Technique Used by the English Teacher in Teaching Speaking Skill

Abstract

Elicitation technique is the technique used by teachers to get students to speak in the classroom. This technique provides the teacher to get the students to provide the information rather than only giving it to them. The aim of this study is to find out the types of elicitation technique used by the English teacher in teaching speaking skill at SMA Laboratorium Unsyiah Banda Aceh. A qualitative study was employed as the method of this research. This study was conducted at SMA Laboratorium Unsyiah Banda Aceh. The subject of this study was one English teacher that was chosen by using purposive sampling technique. To collect the data, an observation was conducted by using this instruments: observation sheet and audio recorder. Interview was also done to gain more information from the teacher by using interview guide. The result of this study indicated that the teacher applied all types of elicitation technique proposed by Tsui (1995) namely elicit inform (45.16%), elicit confirm (25.80%), elicit agree (9.67%), elicit commit (6.45%), elicit repeat (6.45%) and elicit clarify (6.45%).
