Abstract

Telogen effluvium (TE) is one of the most common causes of diffuse nonscarring hair loss. A number of factors have been implicated in the causation of TE, however, clear evidence in their support is lacking. The role of stress as a causative factor as well as the result of hair loss needs to be adequately understood. Telogen effluvium can occur in people of any age, gender, and racial background. Telogen effluvium can occur in both men and women, although women have a greater tendency to experience this condition due to postpartum hormonal changes and also women experience hair loss more often than men. In children, TE was reported to be responsible for only a minority of cases with hair loss (2.7%). The symptom of acute and chronic TE is increased hair loss. Usually, the hair will fall out at an increasing rate. The remaining hair will feel less dense. Acute telogen effluvium can heal itself by eliminating the triggering factor which is done by providing education to the patient while treatment for chronic TE can be done by giving Minoxidil. Keywords: Telogen effluvium acute and chronic; hair loss; minoxidil.
