Abstract

English Department, Faculty of Language and Art, State University of Surabaya wiwieteva@unesa.ac.id Abstrak Siswa kelas tujuh SMP Ainul Ulum ditengarai memiliki kemampuan Inggris yang rendah dikarenakan kosakata yang dimilikinya rendah. Disamping itu, metode pengajaran guru tergolong monoton yang membuat siswa tidak memiliki semangat dalam belajar. Berdasarkan permasalahan yang ada, penulis mencoba mengunakan permainan dalam meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata siswa dengan mengunakan permainan estafet word pada bacaan deskripsi di kelas tujuh. Permainan-permainan estafet word direkomendasikan sebagai teknik yang sesuai untuk pengajaran vocabulary. Permainan tersebut bisa membantu siswa dalam belajar vocabulary khususnya pada bacaan deskipsi. Penelitian ini menggunakan quasi experiment yang mengunakan model nonequivalent control group. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mencari tahu apakah terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan pada penguasaan kosakata siswa diantara mereka yang mendapat treatments dan yang tidak mendapat treatments. Data keseluruhan dari penelitian ini diperoleh dari nilai pre-tes dan pos-tes siswa pada kelas ekperimen dan kontrol. Nilai tersebut dianalisis mengunakan t-test analisis yang terdapat di aplikasi SPSS 16 yaitu paired sample t-test dan independent sample t-test. Kedua dari hasil analisis tersebut menunjukkan bahwa hasil P value signifikan. Hal tersebut mengindifikasi bahwa terdapat peningkatan nilai pada siswa yang menerima treatment. Oleh karena itu, hipotesis alternatif dapat terbulti dan diterima. Hipotesis alternatif dari penelitian ini menyatakan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada penguasaan kosakata siswa diantara siswa yang diajar vocabulary mengunakan permainan estafet word dibanding siswa yang tidak. Kesimpulannya, penggunaan permainan ini dapat meningkatkan pembendaharaan kosakata siswa khususnya pada bacaan deskripsi. Kata Kunci: Penguasaan Kosakata, Permainan, Permainan estafet word, Bacaan deskripsi Abstract It was found that the students at seventh grade of SMP Ainul Ulum were lack in all aspects of English mastery because of their vocabulary was poor. Besides, the teacher’ teaching was monotonous; it prevents the students to have motivation and enthusiasm to learn. Based on this case, the writer tried to use games in increasing students’ vocabulary mastery by using estafet word games in descriptive text to seventh graders of SMP AU. Those games can help the students learn vocabulary, and they are able to increase the students’ vocabulary mastery especially in descriptive text. The study was quasi experiment which used nonequivalent control group design. The goal of the study is to find out the difference of vocabulary mastery between students who got the treatments and those who did not. The overall data of the study was obtained from students’ scores of pre-test and post-test. Then, they were analyzed using t-test analysis in SPSS 16. The writer used paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. Both of the results show that the P value was significant. It indicated that there was score improvement between students who got treatments and those who did not. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis HI was proven or accepted.The alternative hypothesis HI of the study was “there is significant difference in students’ vocabulary mastery between students who are taught by using estafet word games and those who did not”. In summary, the use estafet word games can increase students’ vocabulary mastery especially the ones which were related to descriptive texts. Keyword: Vocabulary Mastery, Games, Estafet word
