English Education Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, The State University of Surabaya [e-mail] Abstrak Ada dua keterampilan dasar dalam bahasa pembelajaran yang kita kenal yaitu, reseptif dan produktif. Keterampilan tersebut memiliki dua cabang, membaca termasuk dalam keterampilan reseptif atau kemampuan untuk mendapatkan masukan atau pengetahuan. Dalam membaca, tujuan utamanya adalah untuk memahami apa yang kita baca dengan jelas. Sebagian besar guru di setiap mata pelajaran menyampaikan pengetahuan kepada peserta didik menggunakan literasi, khususnya guru bahasa Inggris. Dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris, peserta didik terkadang mengalami kesulitan dalam memahami bacaan. Menjawab pertanyaan adalah salah satu cara untuk mengukur apakah peserta didik memahami bacaan tersebut atau tidak. Dalam hal itu, guru perlu untuk memperkenalkan kepada peserta didik strategi membaca efektif.Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menggambarkan pelaksanaan strategi Question – Answer Relationships dan bagaimana tanggapan para siswa terhadap strategi tersebut. Strategi Question – Answer Relationships adalah salah satu strategi yang efektif yang dapat digunakan siswa dalam membaca. Strategi ini adalah tentang menemukan beberapa informasi dalam teks dengan mengetahui kategori pertanyaan. Strategi ini diciptakan oleh ahli literasi, Dr. Taffy E. Raphael, Ph.D. pada tahun 1997. Peneliti mengumpulkan data dengan melakukan pengamatan sebanyak tiga kali menggunakan observation checklist dan kuesioner. Faktanya, hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa strategi Question – Answer Relationships adalah strategi yang efektif dan baik digunakan. Berdasarkan hasil yang disimpulkan, strategi QAR membuat peserta didik menjawab pertanyaan seputar pemahaman lebih cepat dan mudah. Guru menyediakan QAR Practice Sheet untuk membantu siswa menerapkan strategi. Setelah siswa mampu menerapkan strategi menggunakan Practice Sheet, guru melatih mereka untuk melakukannya secara mandiri. Dengan sering berlatih menggunakan strategi tersebut, peserta didik dapat menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan komprehensif dengan mudah dan juga dapat memahami tentang bacaan. Abstract There are two basic skills in learning language that we know such as, receptive and productive skills. They are specified in two parts for each, reading is included in receptive skill or the capability of getting input. In reading, the main point of it is to clearly comprehend what we read. Most teachers in any subjects try to deliver the knowledge to the learners using literacy, especially English. In fact, in English lesson, learners have difficulty in comprehend the text sometimes. Answering questions is a way to measure whether the learners understand the text or not. In that case, teacher needs to introduce them to the effective reading strategies. The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of Question – Answer Relationship strategy and how are the students’ responses toward the strategy. Question – Answer Relationships is one of the effective strategies that students can use in reading. This strategy is about locating some information in the text by knowing the questions’ category. It was invented by Taffy E. Raphael, Ph.D. a Literacy Expert in 1997. The researcher collected the data by conducting observation three times using observation checklist and questionnaire. In fact, the result of this study explicated that Question – Answer Relationships strategy is an effective and good strategy. Based on the results concluded, QAR strategy made the learners answer comprehensive questions quicker and easier. The teacher provided QAR Practice Sheet to help the students applying the strategy. After the students able to apply the strategy using Practice Sheet, teacher trained them to do it independently. By practicing this strategy frequently, learners could answer the comprehensive questions easily and understand about the text.
