THE EFFECT OF PERSONAL GLOSSARIES AS VOCABULARY LEARNING STRATEGY ON LEARNERS’ VOCABULARY RETENTION ASTRI NUR FADILAH English Education, Language and Art Faculty, State University of Surabaya astrifadilah@mhs.unesa.ac.id Abstrak Strategi pembelajaran kosakata telah menjadi topik penelitian yang menarik selama bertahun-tahun. Tidak hanya karena banyaknya aspek yang dapat dibahas, tetapi juga karena fungsinya untuk peserta didik dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa kedua. Membahas kosakata tidak dapat dipisahkan dari memori, lebih tepatnya adalah retensi kosakata. Jadi, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh strategi pembelajaran kosakata yang bernama Personal Glosaries pada retensi kosakata peserta didik. Desain penelitian eksperimental digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Subjek penelitian dari penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa dari kelompok eksperimen dan 30 siswa dari kelompok kontrol. Tes objektif kosakata digunakan sebagai instrumen penelitian. Peneliti juga menggunakan kuesioner untuk mengetahui bagaimana siswa menanggapi efektivitas Personal Glossaries. Immediate dan delayed post-test telah diberikan untuk mengetahui pengaruh Personal Glosaries pada retensi kosakata jangka pendek dan retensi kosakata jangka panjang peserta didik. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Personal Glossaries efektif untuk meningkatkan retensi kosakata peserta didik baik jangka pendek maupun jangka panjang. Meskipun, Personal Glossaries efektif dalam pembelajaran kosakata peserta didik, tidak semua siswa setuju bahwa mereka senang menggunakannya sebagai strategi pembelajaran kosakata mereka. Maka dari itu, saran untuk peneliti selanjutnya telah diberikan pada bagian terakhir dari penelitian ini. Kata Kunci: Personal Glossaries, strategi pembelajaran kosakata, retensi kosakata. Abstract Vocabulary learning strategy has been an interesting topic in research for many years. Not only for its many aspects that can be discussed, but also for its function for the learners in learning English as a second language. Discussing vocabulary cannot be separated from memory, more precisely is vocabulary retention. So, this study aims to investigate the effect of a particular vocabulary learning strategy named Personal Glossaries on learners’ vocabulary retention. Experimental research design was used in this study. The subjects of this study were 30 students of experimental group and 30 students of control group. An objective vocabulary test was used as the instrument of this study. The researcher also used questionnaire in order to know how the students perceived the effectiveness of personal glossaries. Immediate and delayed post-test has been administered in order to know the effect of Personal Glossaries on learners’ short-term and long-term vocabulary retention. The results of this study show that personal glossaries are effective to improve both students’ short-term and long-term vocabulary retention. Although, personal glossaries are effective in students’ vocabulary learning, not all students agree that they love to use it as their vocabulary learning strategy. For this, suggestion for further researcher was given in the last part of this study. Kata Kunci: Personal Glossaries, vocabulary learning strategy, vocabulary retention.
