ANALYSIS OF ARGUMENTS IN ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS’ SPEAKING Erwin Iqbal Dwi Angga English Education, Languages and Arts Faculty, The State University of Surabaya [e-mail] Lies Amin Lestari English Education, Languages and Arts Faculty, The State University of Surabaya [e-mail] Abstrak Kemampuan dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris sangat penting dimiliki oleh mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris agar mereka dapat menyampaikan informasi, pesan, dan ide. Oleh karena itu, Jurusan Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) membuat sebuah program yang disebut English Speaking Community (ESC) agar mahasiswa lebih memiliki kesempatan berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris di luar kelas. Mulai dari level 6 ESC, mahasiswa diharuskan menggunakan cara berpikir kritis untuk membuat argumen dan membujuk orang lain tentang topik yang diberikan. Karena itu, mahasiswa diharuskan untuk menggunakan cara berpikir kritis dalam membuat argumen. Namun, hasil dari beberapa penelitian yang sudah dilakukan sebelumnya menunjukkan bahwa bebrapa siswa tidak mampu menggunakan cara berpikir kritis dalam membuat argumen tertulis dan belum ada penelitian yang menunjukkan bagaimana siswa membuat argumen secara lisan. Karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi bagaimana mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris membuat argumen dalam percakapan secara lisan. Hasil analisis dapat dilihat dari tiga aspek. Dari aspek komponen, ada sepuluh dari empat belas argumen yang terbentuk dari semua komponen argumen yang baik dan empat argumen yang lain tidak terbentuk dari komponen argument yang baik. Dari aspek baik atau tidaknya suatu argumen, tiga dari empat belas argumen termasuk argumen yang baik, dan sebelas argumen yang lain termasuk kurang baik. Dari aspek struktur, ada lima argumen yang menggunakan struktur kompleks dan sembilan argumen menggunakan struktur sederhana. Kata Kunci: argumen, berpikir kritis, ESC Abstract The ability to speak in English is very important for English Department students so that they can convey information, messages, and ideas in the target language. To achieve it, the English Department at State University of Surabaya (UNESA) created a program called English Speaking Community (ESC) where students can have more chance to speak English with their friends out of class. From the 6th level of ESC, students are required to use critical thinking skills to argue and persuade others. Therefore, students need to apply critical thinking in making argument. However, several previous studies show that some students seem to fail in using critical thinking skills to make written arguments and none of them showed how they build argument in the speaking context. Therefore, this study is aimed at investigating how English Department students build argument in speaking. The results can be seen from three aspects. From the component aspect, there are ten out of fourteen arguments constructed by all components of good argument and four arguments are not constructed by all components of good argument. From the relevance aspect, it is found that three out of fourteen arguments are considered good, and the other eleven are considered not good. Lastly, from the structural aspect, five arguments use complex structure and nine arguments use simple structure. Keywords: argument, critical thinking, ESC
