Pada kurikulum 2013, guru-guru harus bisa memberikan materi bacaan yang memuat pendidikan karakter dan sekaligus memenuhi keempat kompetensi inti. Dengan membaca biografi Nabi Muhammad, siswa tidak hanya dapat meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris tetapi juga mendapat pelajaran yang bermanfaat dari perjalanan hidup Nabi Muhammad. Selain itu juga dapat memberikan mereka model nyata yang sempurna untuk dicontoh dan menginspirasi dalam membentuk karakter mereka lebih baik. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Penelitian ini diadakan di kelas XI MIA 3 SMA Khadijah Surabaya yang terdiri dari tiga puluh empat siswa. Untuk mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan lembar pengamatan, lembar tugas siswa dan kuesioner. Hasil lembar pengamatan menunjukkan bahwa ada beberapa kegiatan guru dan siswa yang tidak dilakukan sesuai dengan kurikulum 2013. Hasil dari lembar tugas siswa menunjukkan bahwa kebanyakan siswa dapat menjawab semua pertanyaan komprehensi. Tetapi, mereka tidak dapat menjawab pertanyaan dengan menggunakan kata-kata mereka sendiri karena mereka memiliki keterbatasan kosa kata. Dari respon siswa yang didapatkan melalui kuesioner menunjukkan bahwa siswa sangat tertarik membaca teks biografi Nabi Muhammad dalam kelas Bahasa Inggris. Mereka beropini bahwa membaca biografi Nabi Muhammad dapat membantu mereka mempelajari teks pendek biografi, memperoleh banyak kosa kata baru, dan memotivasi mereka untuk membentuk karakter baik yang terinspirasi dari sosok Nabi Muhammad. Kata kunci: pemahaman membaca, kurikulum 2013, teks recount, teks biografi Abstract One of English skills that is important to be taught is reading. In curriculum 2013, teachers have to be able to give reading material which contains character education theme and fulfill four core competencies all at once. By reading Prophet Muhammad’s biography, students not only can foster their reading skill but also take beneficial lessons from his story of life. Moreover, it can give them the real perfect model to be followed and inspire them in forming their good characters better. This study was qualitative descriptive research. It was conducted in XI MIA 3 of SMA Khadijah Surabaya which consisted of thirty four students. To collect the data, the researcher used observation checklist, students’ task and questionnaire. The result of the observation checklist showed that there were some teacher’s and students’ activities that were not done based on curriculum 2013. The result of the students’ tasks showed that students mostly could answer all comprehension questions. Yet, some of them were not be able to answer the questions in their own words for they had lack of vocabulary. From the students’ responses that were obtained through questionnaire, it showed the students were excited to read Prophet Muhammad’s biography in English class. They gave their opinion that reading Prophet Muhammad’s biography helped them to learn short biography text, acquire more new vocabularies and motivate them to form good characters inspired from Prophet Muhammad.
