Abstract

This study aims to investigate the English learning strategies used by teacher in vocational high school. The research method used in this research is a case study. The research focused on result of the strategies used in the classroom, to see whether the strategies applied are successful or not. This study was conducted in a vocational high school Nusantara Nanga Pinoh, with a total of 160 students. All data were obtained through the process of interview, documentation, and observation. The finding showed that the learning strategies utilized by teacher in vocational high school Nusantara Nanga Pinoh were combined between learning activities and various fun activities that can help students improve their English skills, for example by doing storytelling, singing songs in English, doing question and answer directly with the researcher, and having direct conversation in front of the class. These were intended to increase the confidence and motivation of all students. By focusing the students’ problem in learning English in some skills for example listening and speaking, the result of this learning strategies can make students at vocational high school Nusantara Nanga Pinoh experienced positive improvement in their English learning, especially in listening and speaking. The teacher argued that the main problem when teaching is that the teacher has difficulty communicating using English with the students. However, the teacher still tries to find the best way for the students to understand the content and develop the skills in English.
