The mission of the International Journal of Literature and Language Studies (IJLLS) is to provide readers with the development of language studies in linguistics and literature. In addition to manuscripts that center on the study, we welcome manuscripts on a wide range of topics relating to the technology used for language development, cultural impact on languages, computational linguistics, and philosophy of language. IJLLS publishes scholarly conceptual, theoretical, and empirical manuscripts on the study of language and focused on literature and linguistic analysis and development. Submissions to the journal should be readable and understandable by a wide audience. Manuscripts should therefore also focus on analysis or illustration of the issues covered, rather than merely providing a mathematical or technical coverage, which would be more suitable for a specialist journal. All manuscripts are submitted and reviewed electronically. We provide our published authors with both a quality publication and the widespread readership that comes from publishing all manuscripts online within a few weeks of acceptance. This approach ensures that published works are read and cited by the widest possible audience.

Abstract

Technology and education have long been collaboratively combined in a range of ways to provide complementary sources of language learning on a variety of topics. Technology exists and has been day by day upgraded to harmonizing with the demands of society especially education system. In fact, the presence of technology has had a tremendous impact on aspects of our lives. Considering the existence of technology in education, this research is designed to investigate how effective picture use and online technology as a learning medium in boosting students’ mastery of preposition of place and how the role of technology in promoting the learners’ autonomy? In line with that, this research is organized with the intention of examining the role of technology in addition to increasing student autonomy, also helping students improve their ability to learn English prepositions. This is survey research which focuses on the collection of information about the role of technology and pictures for nurturing autonomy and English preposition of place proficiency. It uses one group design. Questionnaire was selected for collecting the data as it provided a survey instrument containing the questions in a self-administered survey. Along with questionnaire, this research also used observation instrument. For the purpose of this study the researcher selects 7 (seven) Myanmar ITP (International Training Program) participating in an English short course at EFL University, in India. Based on the observations and analysis of the data obtained from the questionnaire, some conclusions can be drawn, such as participants realized that the use of technology and picture in the classroom facilitate them to study and they found the benefits of using it when they learn English preposition during the intervention. Next, all participants have experienced a positive increase in both the quantity and quality of their writing. along with that, the use of technology and picture is useful in addition to increasing participants' independence and autonomy.

Abstract

This research analyzed the Love Languages of Daphne Bridgerton in the Netflix series Bridgerton. Gary Chapman’s theory about love languages were applied to categorize the love languages by Daphne Bridgerton. This analysis resulted in five love languages which are the act of service, quality time, receiving gifts, words of affirmation, and physical touch. In analyzing the data, the result was to find out Daphne Bridgerton’s love languages. Besides, this analysis discovered the dominant love languages and the social background reason. Furthermore, the methodology applied is the qualitative descriptive method. The data source is from the Bridgerton series that was aired on 25th December 2020 on Netflix. Documentation and observation were applied as the instrument for conducting the research. Moreover, data collection and data analysis applied transcription and matrix techniques. The findings and discussion of this research showed every sign which indicate the love languages; words of affirmation, act of services, quality time, receiving gifts, and physical touch. From the data analysis, the researcher found the total of the love languages that there were act of services (8), words of affirmation (22), receiving gifts (7), physical touch (25), and quality time (39). Therefore, the dominant love languages is quality time. The reason of quality time is dominant because it is influenced by the social background.

Abstract

Using culturally inappropriate language will cause miscommunication in society. Miscommunication regularly happens due to different principles. One of them is the principle to determine and use kinship terminology in an interaction. Concerning this problem, this present research intended to dope out the problems by focusing on the sociolinguistic study on the kinship terminology in three societies, Indonesian, English, and Korean. Collecting data in this research utilized triangulation theory, which were gathered from three sides; the researcher's knowledge, dictionaries as the secondary data sources, and participants as the primary data sources. Furthermore, purposive sampling was chosen as the sampling technique in order to achieve the target. To achieve the target, native speakers of each society were involved in order to be able to provide authentic data. In analyzing the data, this research utilized contrastive analysis to the similar and different kinship principles in Indonesian, English, and Korean, according the theory which is introduced by Nanda and Warms (2013). Indonesian, which is a heterogenic society, has five kinship principles; generation, relative age, lineality and collaterallity, gender, also consanguineal and affinal. The free society, English, has four principles; generation, lineality and collaterallity, gender, also consanguineal and affinal. Then, in Korean paternal family is more dominant than the maternal family. Korean has seven kinship principles; generation, relative age, lineality and collaterallity, gender, consanguineal and affinal, sex in linking relatives, also side of the family.

Abstract

A language has its primary function as the physical message which is to express meanings and to convey these to someone else. In real communication process, when a speaker communicates, he/she hopes to influence others to respond as he/she wants them to (Ross, 1995, p.5). This can be seen in public speaking. The utterances, the way of uttering them, even the speaker’s motivation influence the speech and the effect on the audience. Therefore, this study analyzes the speeches of an influential speaker in the world, Angela Merkel. There are two research questions formulated in this study: 1) Which Speech Acts types exercise in Angela Merkel’s speeches? 2) Which lexical repetitions are used in the speeches of Angela Merkel? This study uses Austin’s speech act theory and public speaking theory. This study considered as qualitative research. Thus, in order to conduct the study well, content analysis is applied. The subjects of this study are the transcript of Angela Merkel’s speeches. The transcripts of the speeches are analyzed based on Austin’s speech act theory related to the locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary acts performed. Then, the researcher examines the lexical repetition used in the speeches. There are two conclusion gained in this study. The first is the speech acts found in the speeches of Merkel. The second is the lexical repetition used in Merkel’s speeches. In this study, the locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary acts found are varied. Based on the sentence form, Merkel uttered her point in the form of declaratives, imperatives, interrogatives, exclamations, and fragments. However, Merkel’s speeches uttered the locutionary acts mostly in the form of declarative sentences. In the first speech, there are 23 possible illocutionary acts which fall under assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive. More various, there are 29 possible illocutionary acts found in Angela Merkel’s second speech which fall under the category of assertive, directive, commissive, expressive and declaration. The possible perlocutionary acts on the audience are varied. They depend on the illocutionary acts conveyed in Merkel’s transcripts of speeches. There are three forms of lexical repetitions used in Angela Merkel’s transcripts of speeches, namely words, phrases, or clauses which are repeated separately during the speech, in sequenced sentences, as well as within the sentence. Through lexical repetition, the speaker could clarify and emphasize her points. The audience could gain the remarkable content of the speeches better. Repetitions make the speeches more interesting, remarkable, and significant in style. Eventually, the results of this study will be beneficial for scholars, public speaker, as well as future researchers who are interested in speech acts and lexical repetition of a speech. Teachers and learners can also draw some benefits for the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Semantics is one of the wealthiest and most exciting parts of linguistics. Nowadays, songs play an essential role in people's lives, especially if the songs have good and meaningful lyrics. In addition, meaning also has a vital role in explaining each word in a sentence, thus learning semantics is essential. Many songs use figurative language to express their art in literacy. Song writers use figurative language to express their feelings and thoughts in songs. Sometimes people also use songs for different purposes such as relaxation, entertainment, or learning. This research was conducted to examine the songs from Kanye West in the album Jesus Is King. This study aims to identify the types of figurative language and analyse the most dominant types of figurative language used in Kanye West's song lyrics in the album "Jesus Is King." The research method used in compiling this thesis was a qualitative approach. The tool used in this research was textual analysis. To answer the research problem, the researcher used figurative language theory by Greg Johnson and Thomas R. Arp (2016) to identify and analyse figurative language in song lyrics. The researcher also used the Oxford Learner's Dictionary to find out the meaning of words in sentences. The data, which is the song lyrics of Kanye West in Jesus Is King album, counted eleven songs were obtained through Genius. The research results showed that there were only nine songs whose lyrics contained figurative language on the album of the eleven songs. In these nine songs, 38 figurative languages ​​were found in the lyrics. There were nine types of figurative language they were metaphor with 19 numbers, simile with seven numbers, symbols with three numbers, metonymy, overstatement, and irony with two numbers, personification, allegory, and understatement with 1 number, and the last type of figurative language which not appearing was apostrophe and paradox. Based on this research, it can be concluded that the most dominant type of figurative language in Kanye West's songs was a metaphor. The researcher hopes that this research will be helpful as a reference for future researchers interested in conducting research in the field of semantics.

Abstract

This research deals with the analysis of shifts in the translation of English Participles that occur in Psalm of Biblical text. Based on its main topic, it is manifest that the main objectives of the study were to answer the three research problems under study; those are (1) What types of shifts occur in the translation of English participles found in the book of Psalm? (2) Which one is the most dominant shift linguistically realized in the book of Psalm? The data was collected from Psalm of Holy Bible NIV, as the SL; and Mazmur from Alkitab, as the TL, by applying the documentation method of close-reading and note-taking technique. Then, the data were classified into some groups according to their type and functions in columns. Since this study was conducted based on a descriptive qualitative method, the data were descriptively analyzed based on theories from Quirk and Catford, to find out the answer to the research problems. The result of the data analysis shows that there are some types of shifts found in the translation of English Participles in Psalm of Biblical text. Those shifts are level shifts from grammar to lexis, and category shifts, particularly structure shifts, class shifts, unit shifts, and intra-system shifts. In more detail, the shifts are dominated by Category shift specifically structure shift and the least dominant is the intra-system shift.

Abstract

Word is very essential when learning a language. Word is constructed by derivational and inflectional processes. This research aimed to analyze the types and the most dominant number of derivational and inflectional morphemes found in album song lyrics by Olivia Rodrigo entitled “Sour”. The descriptive qualitative method is used to display the utilization types of derivational and inflectional morphemes in album song lyrics entitled “Sour”. This research analyzed 11 songs in total taken from the album song lyrics by Olivia Rodrigo entitled “Sour”. According to the findings of this research, there are 172 inflectional morphemes classified into eight types and 58 derivational morphemes classified into four types. The most common morpheme in the lyrics is inflectional past tense type, which appeared 41 times. Then, the most dominant derivational is found in the adverb process, as 24 noun processes occur in the album song lyrics.

Abstract

Words can be formed in numerous ways and obviously common in all situations. The progression of word-formation that occurs is fairly unexpected. Therefore, the researcher wishes to discover how the word-formation processes occur in the God Is Able album by Hillsong Worship. This research was carried out to examine the use of word-formation processes in God Is Able album by Hillsong. The descriptive-qualitative research method was used in this research, and the research instrument was documentation analysis. To discover the data, the researcher first downloaded the song lyrics from the 13 songs in God Is Able and transcribed them into a document file. The researcher found 48 words of affixes, 5 words of compounding, and 1 word of borrowing from the total of 54 data in the 13 song lyrics of God Is Able album. This research aimed to help comprehend the use of word-formation in song albums. It is hoped that this research will guide future researchers who are interested in word-formation processes.

Abstract

This study examined the acquisition of Indonesian as a second language by native Japanese speakers. Therefore, this study aimed to find out what things affect Japanese speakers in the process of acquiring Indonesian as their second language and to find out which causes are the most dominant in influencing Indonesian language errors by Japanese speakers. The method used in this research is a literature study, then the error data is classified based on the types of errors and the things that affect the error. After that, the data were analyzed descriptively. From the investigation, 31 data were obtained from errors made by a Japanese speaker when communicating. The Japanese speaker experienced natural Indonesian acquisition and did not study Indonesian formally or informally in a particular institution. The data was obtained in the form of group conversations in an online-based application. From these data, it can be understood that the failure of language use that are usually made by native Japanese speakers are related to vocabulary. Common mistakes made are substitution, omission, and addition of letters. In terms of grammar, not so found errors because in terms of sentences are still classified as correct or acceptable in meaning. However, in sentences that use adverbs of time, errors are still found, such as ‘perundang-undangan di sini mau ganti bulan 3 tahun ini’. From a grammatical point of view, there are no errors, but Indonesians do not usually pronounce 'month 3' but only 'Bulan Maret' or 'Maret' only which means March. This is due to the influence of the mother tongue, which usually mentions Sangatsu, which literally translates to the third month. Therefore, it can be concluded that the errors that are commonly experienced by native Japanese speakers are mostly in the vocabulary that undergoes replacement, omission, and addition of letters due to the unfamiliarity of native Japanese speakers in hearing and pronouncing the pronunciation.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the English learning strategies used by teacher in vocational high school. The research method used in this research is a case study. The research focused on result of the strategies used in the classroom, to see whether the strategies applied are successful or not. This study was conducted in a vocational high school Nusantara Nanga Pinoh, with a total of 160 students. All data were obtained through the process of interview, documentation, and observation. The finding showed that the learning strategies utilized by teacher in vocational high school Nusantara Nanga Pinoh were combined between learning activities and various fun activities that can help students improve their English skills, for example by doing storytelling, singing songs in English, doing question and answer directly with the researcher, and having direct conversation in front of the class. These were intended to increase the confidence and motivation of all students. By focusing the students’ problem in learning English in some skills for example listening and speaking, the result of this learning strategies can make students at vocational high school Nusantara Nanga Pinoh experienced positive improvement in their English learning, especially in listening and speaking. The teacher argued that the main problem when teaching is that the teacher has difficulty communicating using English with the students. However, the teacher still tries to find the best way for the students to understand the content and develop the skills in English.
