Abstract

ABSTRACTGenetics is one of the most difficult subject for students to understand because the concept of genetics is esoteric and abstract. In addition, theoretical learning models, book-centered learning resources, and laboratories rarely used by students become an obstacle by MA Matholi'ul Anwar Simo Karanggeneng Lamongan students in understanding genetic subject. The purpose of this community service activity is to improve students' competence on genetic subject. This activity is carried out by providing bioinformatics-based sequence alignment lesson. Bioinformatics as a science that applies computational techniques to manage and analyze biological information for example in alignment analysis. The method of implementing instruction sequence alignment with practice based on website using NCBI website (National Center for Biotechnology Information) from how to get the gene database until data processing. After following this lesson, students understand that genetics subject can be done using bioinformatics and  student competence better than learning with a package book in genetic subject.Keywords: sequence alignment, bioinformatics, genetics  ABSTRAKGenetika merupakan salah satu materi yang sulit dimengerti oleh sebagian besar siswa karena konsep genetika bersifat esoteric dan abstrak. Selain itu, model pembelajaran yang teoritis, sumber belajar yang berpusat pada buku paket, dan laboratorium yang jarang digunakan oleh siswa menjadi hambatan dialami oleh siswa MA Matholi’ul Anwar Simo Karanggeneng Lamongan dalam memahami materi genetika. Tujuan dalam kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini untuk meningkatkan kompetensi siswa pada materi genetika. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan dengan memberikan pengajaran sequence alignment berbasis bioinformatika. Bioinformatika sebagai ilmu yang menerapkan teknik komputasional untuk mengelola dan menganalisis informasi biologi misalnya pada analisis pensejajaran (alignment analysis). Metode pelaksanaan pengajaran  sequence alignment dengan praktek langsung (practice based on website) menggunakan website NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) mulai dari cara mendapatkan database gen hingga pengolahan datanya. Setelah mengikuti pembelajaran ini, siswa memahami bahwa dalam mempelajari genetika dapat dilakukan menggunakan dasar bioinformatika dan kompetensi siswa dalam materi genetika menjadi lebih baik dibandingkan hanya belajar dengan buku paket.Kata Kunci: sequence alignment, bioinformatika, genetik
