After the death of the Prophet. or during the time of khulafa al-rasyidin, some of the companions of the Prophet settled in Hijaz-Medina and some moved to Kufa-Iraq. Friends who live in the Hijaz-Medina tend to hold on to the Qur'an and the hadith in the legal ruling which later the next generation imitates their understanding. This group is known as the ulama ahl al-hadith. As for his friends and generation who lived in Kufa-Iraq experienced higher dynamics of social change that demanded thought rather than merely relying on the text of hadith, so they were known by the ulama ahl al-ra'yi. The ulama ahl al-hadith is active and very intense in examining the truth of the hadith documentation, while the ulama ahl al-ra'y is more focused on the study of the hadith. Finally, both groups have their own understanding of the hadith style. If the ulama ahl al-hadith understand the hadith of the Prophet textually, while the ulama ahl al-ra'y understand the hadith of the Prophet contextually.
