<![CDATA[This study inform the use of pictures in improving the writing ability of students. This study employed a classroom action research which consisted of three cycles. it involved a class of the first grade students in SMP N 5 Dumai. The data were collected through two techniques, encompassing reading test and observation. The data were analyzed based on the result of the test and the observation. The findings of this study show that the use of pictures can improve the writing procedure text ability of the first grade students in SMP N 5 Dumai. It can be seen from the research findings in terms of student’ reading score and their classroom activities. The first point is that there was an increase in students’ writing test mean score from cycle 1 (57.5) to cycle 2 (65.25) to cycle 3 (80). The second point is in terms of the students’ classroom activities. Based on the writer’s observation, it can be seen that, quantitatively, their activites improved from cycle 1 (54.16%) to cycle 2 (70.83%) and to cycle 3 (87.5%). Those improvements were the effect of the use of pictures in teaching writing procedure text in the class. In conclusion, it can be stated that the use of pictures can improve the writing procedure text ability of the first grade students of SMPN 5 Dumai.
