Abstract

Prediction of seasonal onset which is released by BMKG is important information, especially for agricultural commodities. The weather parameter issued by BMKG to determine the seasonal onset is only the amount of ten-day rainfall, regardless of its frequency (total of rainy days). Therefore, this study was aimed to see how the total rainfall and the frequency of rainy days per ten days acts in determining seasonal onset in East Java. The data used in this study were the total rainfall amount and the frequency of rainy days of tenth-days (decad) from82 rain gauge stations in East Java, with the number of rainy days divided into 5 (five) study scenarios. Using a subjective analysis method that involves descriptive graphical and spatial analysis, an alternative criterion was resulted by adding 3 (three) rainy days (HH) to support the primary criteria in East Java. It is concluded that the onset of the rainy season is determined by a rainfall amount of ≥ 50 mm and total rainy days of ≥3 days per decade, while the onset of the dry season is determined by a rainfall amount of < 50 mm and a total of rainy days of <3 days per decade.
