THE SUBTITLES OF FILLER SOUNDS IN “SOFIA THE FIRST: A ROYAL MESS”

Abstract

Filler sounds are items used to fill the empty space in conversations. There are some filler sounds in the animation movie “Sofia the First: A Royal Mess”, and they are subtitled into lexical items in the level of words, phrases or clauses, written with capital letters in parentheses/brackets, therefore, they are interesting to  analyze. This study aims at finding out the subtitles of filler sounds appeared on the screen in “Sofia the First: A Royal Mess” and analyzing the functions of those filler sounds. The results show that there are five subtitles of filler sounds found in this animation movie, those are ‘clear throat’, ‘chuckle’, ‘gasp’, scoff, and ‘sigh’. Subtitles ‘clear throat’, ‘chuckle’, and ‘scoff’ have spontaneity function that are used to response someone’s requests, while subtitles ‘gasp, and ‘sigh’ appear during pauses in conversations as a part of textual interactivity with reference to non-fluency in conversation.
