Abstract

Plagiarism remains a significant challenge in academic contexts, particularly for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) student teachers and lecturers. This study explores the difficulties faced by both groups in avoiding plagiarism and aims to develop effective strategies to address these challenges, thereby fostering the production of high-quality academic work. Employing a qualitative approach, this research focuses on fifth-semester students in the Department of English Education at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, enrolled in the Article Writing Course. Findings reveal that student teachers and lecturers face various challenges, including low motivation, limited understanding of citation and referencing, grammatical errors, language comprehension difficulties, reliance on minimal effort, and insufficient writing skills. To mitigate these issues, several strategies are identified, such as providing motivational support, organizing writing seminars, enhancing training in writing techniques, raising awareness of academic integrity, fostering idea development, and implementing plagiarism detection tools. These findings contribute to the understanding of plagiarism prevention in EFL contexts and highlight the importance of targeted interventions to improve academic writing practices.
