Abstract

Peripartum depression is a psychological problem that can occur due to life stressors or what is usually called a stressful life event. The dynamics of the relationship between stressful life events and peripartum depression do not occur directly, but there is the role of trait rumination, which also influences the relationship between the two. This study examines the role of the rumination trait as a moderator between stressful life events and peripartum depression. 105 research participants were recruited by an accidental sampling technique. Data collection used the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS), and Stressful Life Event Questionnaire (SLEQ). The results of this study indicate the rumination trait can be a moderator of the role of SLE on DP, where the brooding subtype strengthens while the reflection subtype buffers. The practical implication of this research is that trait reflection as a form of adaptive trait can be formed by accustoming individuals to focusing on solving stressors rather than thinking about stressors continuously, which increasingly makes them trapped in negative affect. Keywords: life stressor, peripartum depression, pregnancy, postpartum, trait rumination
