Language is a sign of God's power that He gave to humans so that humans can be distinguished and different from other creatures. Knowing how humans acquired their language is so urgent today, that there are many theories that we will discuss in this article. Language acquisition is a process that occurs in a child's brain when learning his or her first language or mother tongue. Mother tongue is the language that is learned first. Language acquisition is different from language learning. Language learning is related to the process that occurs when a child learns a second language after he learns his first language. Thus, language acquisition is related to the first language, while language learning is related to the second language. Humans acquire their language step by step so one of the important things in this research is knowing the stages of language acquisition. Therefore, this article aims to describe: (1) the notion of language acquisition and its distribution, (2) the theory of language acquisition, and (3) the stages of language acquisition in childhood. This study uses a library research method whose data are obtained from books and scientific articles.
