AbstractThe researcher analyzes the frequency of code switching and code mixing in English teaching-learning process which is used by English teachers and students on the seventh grade at MtsNegeri 2 Pontianak. Further, it also intended to identify the relations teachers and students build through code switching and code mixing. This research used descriptive research which was built toward theory from observations and intuitive understandings gleaned from being in the field. Descriptive statistical analysis was a technique of data analysis and recorder was an instrument in this research. The result showed 13% of utterances which are in code switching, 26% of utterances are in code mixing, and 61% of utterances are combinations of first language and second language or foreign language. One of them is to build a connection or relationship towards student understands. Furthermore, the impact of social and cultural value are closely related on teachers or students do code switch/code mix. This research gives the information as a benchmark or guidance to teachers of the frequency in using code switching and code mixing in teaching-learning process, so that teachers can make an improvement in teaching-learning process.Keywords:.Code switching, code mixing, descriptive research,L1/L2
