Abstract

Post-episiotomy pain is discomfort that causes difficulty in performing daily activities and decreased mobility in mothers, thus inhibiting the process of care and smooth breastfeeding. Foot reflexology is one method of reducing pain, but this therapy has never been performed on post-episiotomy patients. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of foot reflexology massage to reduce pain intensity at 6, 12, and 18 hours after episiotomy. The design of this study was pretest-posttest with control group. The study sample was 76 post-episiotomy mothers who met the inclusion criteria, who were then randomly divided into two groups, each consisting of 38 people, as an intervention group that received foot reflexology massage and a control group. Foot reflexology massage was given for 5 minutes at the pituitary gland point, reproductive glands and pain-reducing points. The level of pain was measured using the Visual Analog Scale, then a comparative analysis of the level of pain between before and after the intervention was carried out using paired samples t-test and between groups using independent samples t-test. The results of the study showed a decrease in pain intensity after intervention at 6, 12 and 18 hours in the intervention group (p = 0.000). In addition, the results of the comparison test between groups showed differences in pain levels at 6, 12 and 18 hours. Thus, it could be concluded that foot reflexology massage is effective in reducing pain intensity in post-episiotomy mothers.
