The purpose of this research is to analyze the thematic elements of cultural identity and the impact of modernity in the short story The Fall of Our Surau by A.A. Nafis. The problem identified is the erosion of traditional values and the consequences of this loss as represented through the symbolic collapse of the surau, which was once a central hub for spiritual and social life. This study employs cultural criticism theory to explore how Nafis critiques the clash between modernity and tradition. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research examines the narrative structure, character development, and symbolism within the story. The results reveal that Nafis uses the surau’s collapse as a powerful metaphor for the broader societal shift, urging readers to reflect on the importance of preserving cultural identity in an era of rapid change
