Abstract

.This research aims to examine the history and urgency of the establishment of Bank Muamalat Indonesia in 1991 as a reflection of the rise of sharia finance in Indonesia. The method used in this research is a historical method with a social science approach that uses social accommodation theory. In this research it was found that the process of establishing Bank Muamalat Indonesia involved many parties such as the Government, the Indonesian Ulema Council, the Association of Indonesian Muslim Scholars, as well as Muslim entrepreneurs. There are obstacles in realizing the idea of establishing the first sharia banking in Indonesia, such as differences in political views, seeking initial capital, and the legal basis that is not yet available. In the end, these obstacles could be overcome by adjusting political views, then looking for investors, and issuing various monetary policies that supported the establishment of sharia banks in Indonesia, so that in 1991 the first sharia banking was established in Indonesia, namely Bank Muamalat Indonesia. The results of this research are that the establishment of Bank Muamalat Indonesia has a very important urgency and influence in developing social, economic and cultural aspects in Indonesia according to sharia.
