Abstract

Mathematics was developed from human activities and culture to answer life's problems. However, there are still many people who see mathematics as far from everyday life. Mathematics teaching needs to be linked to everyday life. This research aims to present fundamental mathematical activities in the tradition of Tabut Bengkulu. This research is qualitative research with an ethnographic approach. The subject of this research is Keluarga Kerukunan Tabut Bencoolen, selected using a purposive sampling technique, followed by snowball sampling. The object of this research is fundamental mathematical activities in the Tabut Bengkulu tradition. Research data was obtained by literature study related to the ethnomathematics of the Tabut Bengkulu tradition, interviews with research subjects, as well as observation and documentation on a series of Tabut rituals. Data analysis was carried out using the stages of data reduction, categorization, synthesis and drawing conclusions. The results show that there are fundamental mathematical activities in the Tabut Bengkulu tradition. Fundamental mathematical activities consist of: counting and number operations; locating the position of the Dol, the placement of the radius and the ritual location of the Tabut; measuring is found in the process of making the Tabut and Dol and when pick up the soil; designing is found in the geometric aspects of the Tabut and Dol, arranging the bottom and top of the Tabut, and making the Dol; playing is based on the Dol rhythm rules when the ritual takes place; explanations include the meaning of the Tabut, the ritual philosophy of the Tabut, and explanations about Dol. The results of this research can be designed as an approach to the mathematics learning process.
