Abstract

Background: Emergence agitation (EA) is an acute condition of confusion and restlessness that occurs during the recovery phase after general anesthesia, characterized by purposeless excessive motor activity and often accompanied by impaired consciousness. Objective: This study aims to describe the incidence of emergence agitation in post-otolaryngology surgery patients undergoing general anesthesia in the recovery room at Siaga Medika General Hospital Purbalingga. Method: This was a non-experimental study with a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique used was accidental sampling, with a total of 32 respondents. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis. Result: The results showed that 11 respondents (31.4%) experienced EA. Based on age, the highest incidence occurred in children aged 1–5 years, with 7 respondents (21.9%). Based on gender, 7 male respondents (21.9%) experienced EA. Regarding the type of surgery, EA was most common in pharyngology/laryngology procedures, with 9 respondents (28.1%). All respondents received anesthesia using the balanced anesthesia technique. Conclusion: The incidence of EA is more common in preschool-aged boys undergoing otolaryngology surgery.
