Peran Nyai dalam Pelaksanaan Pendidikan di Pondok Pesantren Ashri Jember: The Role of Nyai in the Implementation of Education at Ashri Islamic Boarding School, Jember

Abstract

A critical issue underlying this study is the public perception that a Nyai’s role in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) stems solely from her husband’s influence as a Kyai, rather than from her own capacity. This study aims to identify and describe the roles of Nyai in formal and nonformal education at Pondok Pesantren Ashri Jember. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The findings reveal that Nyai plays essential roles as an educator and cultural mediator. In formal education, Nyai serves as a teacher, mentor, and leader, including establishing an Ibtidaiyah madrasah for dropout students. In nonformal education, Nyai’s role is more extensive due to 24-hour interaction with students, encompassing caregiving that fosters independence and Quran memorization, as well as serving as a role model in worship and leadership. The study concludes that Nyai at PPI Ashri is not merely a Kyai’s companion but an active educational change agent. It is recommended that further research explore Nyai’s contributions to community empowerment within pesantren. Fenomena krusial yang melatarbelakangi penelitian ini adalah persepsi masyarakat bahwa peran Nyai di pesantren semata-mata karena pengaruh Kyai, bukan karena kapasitasnya sendiri. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi dan mendeskripsikan peran Nyai dalam pelaksanaan pendidikan formal dan nonformal di Pondok Pesantren Ashri Jember. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan rancangan studi kasus, data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam, observasi partisipan, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Nyai memiliki peran penting sebagai pendidik dan mediator budaya. Dalam pendidikan formal, Nyai berperan sebagai pengajar, pembimbing, dan pemimpin, seperti membuka Madrasah Ibtidaiyah bagi santri putus sekolah. Dalam pendidikan nonformal, peran Nyai lebih besar karena interaksi 24 jam dengan santri, mencakup peran sebagai pengasuh yang membimbing kemandirian dan hafalan Al-Qur’an, serta sebagai sumber teladan dalam ibadah dan kepemimpinan. Kesimpulannya, Nyai di PPI Ashri tidak sekadar pendamping Kyai, melainkan agen perubahan pendidikan yang aktif. Direkomendasikan agar riset lanjutan mengeksplorasi kontribusi Nyai dalam pemberdayaan masyarakat pesantren.
