Abstract

The advancement of technology has made society heavily reliant on the internet and social media, which are typically accessed through information and communication technologies (smartphones, laptops, computers, smart TVs, and others). Social media possesses characteristics that allow its users to upload their own content. These characteristics have led to a new phenomenon where internet users are more easily exposed to and spread misinformation or incorrect information. This phenomenon has highlighted the importance of internet users' ability to identify whether information is true or false. Therefore, this study aims to measure socio-emotional skills and information skills as abilities that are considered to influence the capability to identify incorrect information. The population of this study consists of all students of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Universitas Negeri Jakarta. The sample for this study was obtained using probability sampling techniques with cluster random sampling, 103 respondents. Data collection was carried out through survey methods to gather primary data such as respondents' characteristics, the ability to identify misinformation, socio-emotional skills, and information skills. Data collection was conducted from June 14 to July 17, 2024. Data analysis included hypothesis testing using multiple linear regression tests. The results showed that most of the independent variables measured in this study significantly contributed to influencing the ability to identify misinformation, as indicated by an R-square value of 0.426. The information skills dimension had a significant positive impact on the ability to identify information. However, the socio-emotional skills dimension did not have a significant impact on the ability to identify misinformation. Therefore, it can be concluded that H1 is accepted and H2 is rejected.
