Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) in improving the speaking ability of students in the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) class at the Faculty of Tarbiyah, Islamic Institute of Riyadlotul Mujahidin. The research involved 15 students majoring in Islamic Religious Education, who were specifically observed in their speaking activities. Employing a quantitative research design, the data were collected through questionnaires to measure students’ perceptions and documentation of their speaking performance. Statistical analysis was conducted using a paired sample t-test to compare students’ performance before and after the use of MALL. The results indicated a significant improvement in speaking ability, with the mean score increasing from 65.40 (pre-test) to 78.60 (post-test). The t-test value (t = 6.214, p < 0.05) confirmed that the difference was statistically significant. Furthermore, questionnaire responses showed that 87% of students perceived MALL as helpful, interactive, and motivating in developing their speaking competence. The findings suggest that MALL is an effective tool for enhancing ESP students’ speaking skills and can serve as a valuable digital resource in Islamic higher education contexts
