AbstractThis study aims to reveal the conflict between Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah byapplying Mead’s Interactionism Symbolic Theory. By exploring three stages of symbolicinteraction which are self, self interaction, and symbolic meaning, it can be understood howthe conflicts between those two Islam organization happens. In this case, they group themselvesinto Nahdlatul Ulama or Muhammadiyah congregations according to their respectivecharacteristics. In the last stage of symbolic interpretation, it can be revealed that there is anideology that underlies each of the ideals so that they differ in interpreting the teachings ofIslam. This is reinforced by goats and rains that symbolize the focus of the two Islamic conflicts.In the end, from the conflict it can be concluded that the Indonesian people are monotheistswho accept only one religion. Besides, it is also found that Indonesian society is monotheismwhich believes in only one religion so that they cannot accept another religion or even otherism of Islam.AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk membedah proses terjadinya konflik antara Nahdlatul Ulama denganMuhammadiyah dalam novel Kambing dan Hujan dengan menggunakan teori InteraksionismeSimbolik Herbert Mead. Melalui tiga tahapan proses interaksi simbolik, ditemukan bahwa padatahapan self para tokoh masih saling meraba-raba adanya paham-paham yang mereka anut.Kemudian, pada self interaction para tokoh mengalami proses pengenalan diri bahwa denganberinteraksi dengan orang-orang mereka menemukan adanya paham yang sejalan dengan yangdianutnya dan ada yang tidak. Dalam hal ini, mereka kemudian mengelompokkan diri menjadi jamaahNahdlatul Ulama atau Muhammadiyah sesuai dengan karakteristik masing-masing. Pada tahapterakhir, yakni interpretasi simbolik, dapat dikuak adanya ideologi yang melandasi masing-masingpaham sehingga mereka berbeda dalam menginterpretasikan ajaran Islam. Hal ini diperkuat dengankambing dan hujan yang menyimbolkan fokus konflik kedua paham Islam tersebut. Pada akhirnya,dari konflik tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa masyarakat Indonesia merupakan monoteis yangmenerima satu agama saja.Kata kunci: interaksi simbolik, konflik, puritan, simbol, sinkretis
