Politik Keseharian: Penggunaan Sepatu di Masyarakat Batavia Awal Abad ke-20

This article discusses the relationship and impact of macro-political changes on the microsphere of everyday life. The case study discussed how the political changes created the use of shoes as a new culture and formed the different representations and experiences of each ethnic group in Batavia. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Dutch government implemented a liberal Ethical Policy as a form of Dutch reciprocation to improve life in the Dutch East Indies. Ethical Politics, which are liberal and inclusive, open wider opportunities for people outside Western groups to be in better positions in social structure or on par with Western groups. This research uses the historical method with the New Cultural History approach. Furthermore, this study uses the theory of Politics of Everyday Life to see how the relationship between politics in the macro realm can affect the microdomain. The results of this study indicate that the new policy has created a new era in Batavian society. Changes in politics have had a domino effect in the socio-economic realm and even in people's daily lives, such as the use of shoes as a new identity. However, the heterogeneous Batavian society makes the identity values in shoes not the same, not only seen as a projection of the strength of the position of the social structure but also seen as a representation of the socio-cultural experience of each ethnic group. This had an impact on the value of footwear that developed in Batavian society, which differed based on certain ethnicities. Abstrak:Artikel ini membahas hubungan dan dampak perubahan politik makro pada ranah mikro seperti kehidupan sehari-hari. Studi kasus yang dibahas dalam artikel adalah bagaimana perubahan politik yang menciptakan penggunaan sepatu menjadi budaya baru dan membentuk representasi serta pengalaman yang berbeda tiap etnis di Batavia pada awal abad ke-20. Di awal abad ke-20, pemerintah Belanda menerapkan kebijakan Politik Etis yang liberal sebagai bentuk rasa balas budi Belanda untuk memperbaiki keadaan di Hindia-Belanda. Politik Etis yang bersifat liberal dan inklusif, membuka pintu semakin lebar untuk memberikan kesempatan orang-orang di luar kelompok etnis Barat untuk berada di posisi struktur sosial yang lebih baik atau disetarakan dengan kelompok etnis Barat. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode sejarah dengan pendekatan New Cultural History. Lebih lanjut penelitian ini menggunakan teori Politics of Everyday Life untuk melihat bagaimana hubungan pergerakan politik dalam ranah makro dapat mempengaruhi ranah mikro, yakni kebiasaan dan ide sehari-hari di masyarakat. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa perubahan kebijakan yang bersifat terbuka menciptakan era baru di dalam masyarakat Batavia. Perubahan pada politik memberikan efek domino pada ranah sosial-ekonomi bahkan hingga kehidupan sehari-hari masyarakat seperti dalam penggunaan sepatu sebagai identitas baru. Akan tetapi, masyarakat Batavia yang heterogen membuat nilai identitas yang ada di sepatu tidaklah sama, tidak hanya dilihat sebagai proyeksi kekuatan posisi struktur sosial tetapi juga dilihat sebagai representasi dari pengalaman sosial-kultural yang dialami di tiap etnis. Hal ini berdampak pada nilai alas kaki yang berkembang di masyarakat Batavia berbeda-beda berdasarkan etnis tertentu.
