Abstract

This article discusses the resilience of Muslim identity and the awareness of halal principles among Indonesian Migrant Workers (IMWs) in South Korea. As a developed country with strong economic growth, South Korea has become an important destination for migrating Indonesian Muslim communities. By applying symbolic interaction theory, this research provides insight into understanding the role of religion in social interactions, identity formation, and the interpretation of halal products by IMWs and other social actors in the Korean environment. The research findings on IMWs indicate that there are at least two attitudes among the Indonesian Muslim diaspora in South Korea regarding their Islamic identity as measured by their awareness of halal principles. The first attitude is selective and strictly adheres to the religious values prevalent in Indonesia. The second attitude is a permissive one, where an Indonesian Muslim diaspora makes efforts to adapt their values to the local culture as long as they do not violate clear boundaries in Islamic law.

Abstract

The Yogyakarta Platenalbum manuscript is a manuscript that tells about Javanese culture, especially Yogyakarta. This text contains various cultures, such as children's games, palaces, people's weddings, ceremonies inside and outside the court, tales, wayang, performances, procedures, customs, agriculture, and one text that explains Candraning Wanita. Using literature library research, this article discusses people's wedding attire in the Yogyakarta Platenalbum manuscript No. 26-30. From this research process, several models of clothing were used during commoners' wedding celebrations. The clothes worn by the people are certainly different from those used by the royal family. This is caused by differences in social status in Javanese society, especially in Yogyakarta and Surakarta. In different moments or processions, but still in a series of weddings, the bride and groom wear different clothes. Not only the bride and groom, but the family and neighbors involved in a series of wedding rituals, also wear clothes regulated by Javanese custom.

Abstract

This article discusses the relationship and impact of macro-political changes on the microsphere of everyday life. The case study discussed how the political changes created the use of shoes as a new culture and formed the different representations and experiences of each ethnic group in Batavia. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Dutch government implemented a liberal Ethical Policy as a form of Dutch reciprocation to improve life in the Dutch East Indies. Ethical Politics, which are liberal and inclusive, open wider opportunities for people outside Western groups to be in better positions in social structure or on par with Western groups. This research uses the historical method with the New Cultural History approach. Furthermore, this study uses the theory of Politics of Everyday Life to see how the relationship between politics in the macro realm can affect the microdomain. The results of this study indicate that the new policy has created a new era in Batavian society. Changes in politics have had a domino effect in the socio-economic realm and even in people's daily lives, such as the use of shoes as a new identity. However, the heterogeneous Batavian society makes the identity values in shoes not the same, not only seen as a projection of the strength of the position of the social structure but also seen as a representation of the socio-cultural experience of each ethnic group. This had an impact on the value of footwear that developed in Batavian society, which differed based on certain ethnicities.

Abstract

PurposeThis study aimed to compare the narratives of three modern historiographies of the Sirah Nabawiya. It explored differences and similarities of Raḫīq Al-Makhtūm, Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources, and Membaca Sirah Nabi Muhammad dalam Sorotan Al-Qur'an dan Hadis-Hadis Sahih.MethodThis research employed a qualitative approach, adopting the historical method. The primary data were the most recent published editions of Al-Raḥīq Al-Makhtūm (2019) by Safiyurrahman Al-Mubarakfuri, Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources (2006) by Martin Lings, and Membaca Sirah Nabi Muhammad dalam Sorotan Al-Qur’an dan Hadis-Hadis Sahih (2018) by M. Quraish Shihab.Results/FindingsThe research showed that each of these three books was written in a chronological style. Al-Raḥīq Al-Makhtūm and Membaca Sirah Nabi Muhammad dalam Sorotan Al-Qur'an dan Hadis-Hadis Sahih offered more detailed information compared to Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources. In their historical analyses, each writer presented their respective perspectives and tendencies. Al-Mubarakfuri emphasized the comparison of historical data and explained the most valid source, while Lings presented the data in a friendly and approachable manner with no in-depth elaboration and personal analyses. Shihab's analysis, however, covered more complex issues beyond historiography, including verification, orientalist criticism, analysis of Quranic sources, and elaboration of moral values.ConclusionThese three works complied with the standard model of a chronological presentation of data and critical analysis, while maintaining a friendly and approachable tone through additional elaboration of perspectives. The authors maintained a balanced and objective approach according to their academic background.
