Students' Perception and Trend Toward The Gender-Based English Class Interaction at The English Department of Universitas Negeri Makassar

Abstract

This study aims to determine: students' perceptions of the distribution of attention given by lecturers to male and female students, students' tendencies towards gender-based grouping in class, tendencies to use gender inclusive or gender exclusive in sentences, gender groups that dominate communicative activities in class, and gender groups that initiate more conversations in communicative activities. The method used is a descriptive method. The sample was selected purposively. The research instruments consisted of questionnaires, checklists, and tests. Data from the questionnaires and checklists were analyzed using percentages, and test data were analyzed using averages. The results of the study showed that: the distribution of lecturers' attention to male and female students was relatively the same, students tended to choose to work in mixed-sex groups, students tended to use gender inclusive or generic use at the word/phrase level, and gender fair at the sentence level; male students were still relatively more dominant in communicative activities, and in mixed-sex communicative activities, male students initiated more conversations.Keywprds: Perception, Gender Based, Class Interaction
