Abstract

This paper reviews the existence and roles of teacher, student and curriculum as three main components of education in middle and high school. The key of successful education is on professional teacher. Therefore, teachers as facilitator of learning in the school must improve professional ability continually. They should encourage contextual learning which is suitable with student’s need and development phase. This is because students are in their growing period to develop their personality maturity.  Likewise, the curriculum as a reference in education realization must cover student's necessity including their complexity in social life, science and technology. Through competence based curriculum, the potentials of students can be appreciated and directed based on student’s intellectual development. Makalah ini mengkaji keberadaan dan peran guru, siswa dan kurikulum sebagai tiga komponen utama pendidikan di sekolah menengah dan atas. Kunci sukses pendidikan adalah pada guru profesional. Oleh karena itu, guru sebagai fasilitator pembelajaran di sekolah harus meningkatkan kemampuan profesional secara terus menerus. Mereka harus mendorong pembelajaran kontekstual yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan dan perkembangan siswa. Hal ini karena siswa berada dalam masa pertumbuhan mereka untuk mengembangkan kedewasaan kepribadian mereka. Demikian juga, kurikulum sebagai referensi dalam realisasi pendidikan harus mencakup kebutuhan siswa termasuk kompleksitasnya dalam kehidupan sosial, sains dan teknologi. Melalui kurikulum berbasis kompetensi, potensi siswa dapat diapresiasi dan diarahkan berdasarkan perkembangan intelektual siswa.
