The addiction to social media has recently gained attention among teenagers, especially as concerns loneliness. The paper focuses on researching the connection between loneliness and social media addiction, taking into consideration the following demographic factors (gender, age, and socioeconomic status) and psychological ones (self-esteem and resilience). In 400 adolescents, there was a cross-sectional survey based on validated scales. The results of Pearson correlation analysis showed a significant positive correlation between the loneliness and social media dependency (r = 0.47, p < 0.01). The results of multiple regression analysis showed that the strongest predictor was definitely loneliness (beta = 0.45, p < 0.001), whereas females and older adolescents demonstrated greater dependency. The mediation analysis revealed that self-esteem mediated this relationship partially and the moderation analyses revealed that resilience moderated the effect of loneliness with relations to social media dependency. These results indicate that there is an imperative of intervention measures targeted at promoting resilience and self-esteem to prevent social media dependency in lonely young people.
