Abstract

The role of faith as a pillar of constructing ethical values and social norms continues to be historically present in different societies and cultures. Based on holy books and explanations by church leaders, religious teachings are sources of morality that guide personal behavior and relationship with others. The Ten Commandments of Judaism and Christianity and the Five Pillars of Islam prescribe doctrinal systems which govern issues of justice, compassion and responsibility. The moral orientation of the followers is further defined by the spiritual institutions, which through hierarchical institutions and charismatic leaders provide guidance, pastoral care and direction to the followers in times of crisis or societal change. The psychological and sociological approaches help to clarify how religion shapes moral values and norms. Cognitive theories highlight inherent tendencies which underpin faith in the sacred whereas sociological theories focus on the influence of religious institutions in promoting cohesion and behavioral control. Empirical studies reveal that there is a positive relationship between religious commitments and prosocial behavior but the effect sizes differ across traditions and cultures. In spite of the pluralism and diversity, interfaith dialogue and advocacy opens the possibilities to improve cooperation and understanding. Societies can use the transformative power of faith to create more inclusive, just, and caring societies by embracing diversity and developing dialogue.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of Neighborhood Watch Programs (NWPs) in burglary prevention in urban neighborhoods by filling some of the gaps in the literature by using a quasi-experimental research design and strong statistical methods. Data sources: police records, community surveys and interviews samples from neighbourhoods with and without NWPs Descriptive statistics showed significantly reduced burglary rates in NWP areas (M = 4.5) compared with non-NWP areas (M = 7.3) with a statistically significant difference (t = -5.32, p < .001, respectively). Further ANOVA, ANCOVA and multiple regression analyses confirmed that NWPs have a significant effect on burglary reduction, independent of property socioeconomic status or police presence. Furthermore, a significant negative correlation was found between community involvement and burglary rate (r=-0.67, p<0.001), thus reaffirming the strong relevance of community involvement in the crime prevention context. These findings support the strong deterrent effect of NWPs on burglary and hold important implications for policy makers and law enforcement. The promotion and facilitation of NWPs is a potential key intervention in urban crime prevention and future research should test their effectiveness with regards to broader crime categories and program level outcomes.

Abstract

This quantitative research looks at the reasons and steps to fixing the racial inequity in the juvenile justice system and the roles played by the socioeconomic status, implicit bias, and school disciplinary measures. With the help of the in-depth processing of juvenile justice files, disciplinary records in schools, and socioeconomic indicators, and complemented by the surveys of interested parties, the study finds meaningful patterns and causal links. The results demonstrate that in poorer neighborhoods, there is a higher rate of arrest and detention, whereas more implicit bias and here severity of school disciplinary measures affect minority youth in disproportional numbers. These findings support the idea of multidimensional intervention, such as economic support of fewer privileged communities, the education of the law enforcement and school officials on implicit bias, as well as the application of restorative justice in schools. Strong empirical evidence given by this study contributes to the further research on the topic of racial inequality in the juvenile justice and indicates viable measures available to reinforce the ideas of equity and justice.
