Abstract

Purpose: This study examines whether Core Problem Solving (CPS) integrated with the Kepner-Tregoe approach can improve quality performance at PT UTC Aerospace System Bandung (UTAS Bandung), an aerospace parts supplier, by reducing the percentage of scrap, rework, and reject (%SRR) from 0.73% in2022 toward the company's five-year target of 0.5% by 2027. Methodology: A single case study was conducted using Systems, Applications, and Products (SAP) in data Processing quality-notification data. The CPS approach, comprising the Define, Investigate, Verify, and Ensure (DIVE) stages, was integrated with Pareto charts, Ishikawa (fishbone) diagrams, and Five Whys analysis to identify the primary source of the Cost of Poor Quality (CoPQ) and evaluate corrective actions through a before-after comparison. Results: The prismatic cell accounted for 61% (approximately USD 154,000) of the USD 254,300 total CoPQ in 2022. Rootcause analysis linked recurring drill-tool failures on part number 340902-110 to low tool rigidity and the absence of a coolant channel. Replacing the finishing tool reduced failure costs from USD 12,000 to USD 3,200 (73%), saving USD 8,800 annually, while total CoPQ decreased by USD 37,223 to USD 217,077 in 2023. Conclusions: CPS combined with Kepner-Tregoe problem analysis provides an effective and replicable approach for reducing CoPQ and achieving the targeted %SRR through data-driven root-cause analysis. Limitations: The study is limited to 2022 SAP records from one site and excludes customer returns and supplier-caused rejects. Contributions:The study provides a practical framework for integrating CPS and Kepner-Tregoe analysis in aerospace manufacturing.
