Abstract

Stroke which usually attacks people above 60 years, can also attack adult people aged around 40 years. The patient's alteration and limitations in movements, communication, and thinking leads to frustration and sense of crisis which in turn develop tension, anxiety, frustration in facing the future, and even depression. This research was keen to find out whether a correlation exists between a sense of humor and social support and level of depression. Subjects (N = 36) are stroke/poststroke (< 1 year) married male patients, having children, aged 36 55 years, high school alumna with normal IQs and scored above normal (>9) on Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and handicapped due to left hemispheric deterioration, covering those with 1 and 2 degrees of disability. Results show a negative and very significant correlation between social support and level of depression. It's recommended to develop a sense of humor in every child as early as possible and enhance social support by every family member of the patient.
