Abstract

Abstract: River fishing communities generally engage in fishing as a recreational activity, while most of their members work in the informal sector with unstable income. Declining fish catches and limited access to formal employment highlight the need for realistic alternative livelihood strategies that build on existing skills and adapt to local socio-ecological conditions. This community service program aimed to transform river fishing activities into an additional source of income through the development of wader pari fish (Rasbora lateristriata) aquaculture as a community-based productive economic venture. The program was implemented over eight months by actively involving fishing communities as partners using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. Activities included technical aquaculture training, water quality management workshops, and institutional strengthening assistance for fish farmers. Evaluation was conducted by comparing partners’ technical and institutional capacities before and after the intervention, as well as through observation of early production cycle development. The results showed a 23% increase in partners’ technical and institutional capacity, the establishment of a more organized fish farming group, and the advancement of wader pari aquaculture to the initial production stage. These findings confirm that participatory-based local fish aquaculture can sustainably expand the role of river fishing communities from recreational activities to alternative livelihood sources.
