Abstract

Breastfeeding is the most beneficial method of infant feeding, as it can reduce the risk of infections in children, support optimal child development, and improve maternal health. Although the benefits of breastfeeding are well recognized, several countries, particularly high-income countries, continue to experience low breastfeeding rates. The continuation of exclusive breastfeeding is multifactorial, and the role and support of midwives during the postpartum period are considered key components. This scoping review aimed to identify the role of postpartum midwifery care in achieving breastfeeding success. The review followed the scoping review methodology proposed by Arksey and O’Malley, which includes five stages: identifying the research question, identifying relevant studies, study selection, data charting, and collating, summarizing, and reporting the results. A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Wiley, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The study designs included were qualitative studies. Six published articles were included in the review. Thematic analysis was used to identify key concepts, which were grouped into four emerging themes: provision of antenatal breastfeeding information, midwives’ support for postpartum and breastfeeding mothers, barriers experienced by midwives, and mothers’ expectations. Overall, breastfeeding success is strongly influenced by the quality of continuous postpartum midwifery care that is woman- and family-centered, and supported by conducive health policies and service systems.
