Classroom Action Research with the title of improving students' initial reading ability using the problem based learning (PBL) model assisted by word search media began with the low reading ability of students at SDN 060858 Medan. This study aims to find solutions to improve students' reading ability in class I of SDN 060858 Medan by using the problem based learning model assisted by word search media. The data collection techniques used in this study were observation and testing. This research method uses classroom action research consisting of 2 learning cycles. The stages of each cycle consist of 4 stages, namely planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. After this research was conducted, it was found that each cycle in learning experienced an increase in students' reading ability and attracted students' attention in learning. In cycle I, the average student score was 62.85 with a completion percentage of 47.61%, then in cycle II it increased, namely with an average score of 81.90 with a completion percentage of 85.71%. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the use of word search media in the problem based learning model can improve the reading skills of students in grade I of elementary school
