Abstract

Film as a cultural text is not neutral but represents power relations, including colonialism, which contributes to social conflict. However, studies that specifically examine the relationship between the representation of colonialism and social conflict in film remain limited. This study aims to analyze the representation of colonialism and how it constructs social conflict in the film Ip Man 2 using Edward Said’s postcolonial perspective. This research employs a qualitative interpretative-critical approach through film text analysis. The unit of analysis consists of four purposively selected key scenes: the colonial officials’ meeting, the boxing match, the humiliation of kungfu, and the final victory of the main character. Data were analyzed through coding and interpretation based on the concept of Orientalism. The findings indicate that the film represents colonialism through a discourse that positions the West as superior and the East as inferior. This representation generates social conflict in the form of domination, stereotyping, and unequal power relations. Additionally, the film also portrays forms of resistance against colonial domination. In conclusion, the film functions as an ideological medium that not only reflects but also constructs power relations and social conflict in society. Man 2 berdasarkan perspektif postkolonial Edward Said.
