Nursing students often encounter difficulties in mastering Basic Nursing Science (BNS) vocabulary, which is fundamental for advancing in their studies. Classroom learning media also remain limited. This study examined the effectiveness of BNS vocabulary learning through Powtoon animation media. A quantitative quasi-experimental pre–post test design with a control group. A total of 70 first-year nursing students were purposively assigned to an experimental group (n = 35) and a control group (n = 35). A 35-item multiple-choice test, validated (r = 0.322–0.768) and proven reliable (α = 0.923), served as the assessment instrument. The experimental group received vocabulary instruction through Powtoon animation, while the control group used handouts. Findings revealed that the experimental group achieved a greater mean score improvement (33.00%) than the control group (18.87%), accompanied by a notable decrease in standard deviation (17.65 to 8.03), indicating more uniform learning. The Mann–Whitney test yielded a p-value of 0.02 < 0.05, confirming the superior effectiveness of Powtoon. Vocabulary with a narrower conceptual scope, particularly “body cavities,” showed the highest gains. Overall, powtoon enhanced learning outcomes and reduced disparities, highlighting the value of integrating interactive audio-visual media in BNS vocabulary instruction to faster more equitable conceptual understanding
