The historical approach in Islamic studies is a research method that emphasizes understanding religious texts, practices, and traditions within the historical context in which they emerged. This approach enables researchers to interpret texts contextually, trace the origins of thought and practices, and assess their applicability in modern society. This article discusses the principles of the historical approach, its application in Islamic studies, the challenges faced, and its benefits for contemporary research. Based on the latest literature analysis (2014–2024), the historical approach enriches the understanding of Islamic study methodology, supports more accurate interpretations, and remains relevant when combined with interdisciplinary methods such as sociology, anthropology, and digital humanities.
