Abstract

ABSTRACT The traditional medicine industry produces liquid waste with high organic concentrations that have the potential to pollute aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to identify the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) process flow and the effectiveness of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) at PT Khalila Tramed Indonesia, Klaten, Central Java, using a descriptive qualitative method. Data were obtained through field observations and in-depth interviews with management. The results showed that waste treatment was carried out through four main pond units: an equalization/sedimentation pond, a multi-stage filtration pond, a bioremediation pond with aerobic bacteria, and a final aeration pond. The stabilization process in the first pond effectively equalizes waste discharge from the production unit. The use of the latest aerobic microbial consortium (Bacillus sp. and Nitrosomonas sp.) is recommended to replace chemical oxidants to optimize the degradation of complex organic substances sustainably. This research provides a framework for medium-scale herbal industries in developing WWTP management that complies with the latest environmental regulations.
