Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the responses of the 2021 cohort of Japanese Literature students at Jenderal Soedirman University (UNSOED) to the anime Kimetsu No Yaiba: Mugen Train focusing on how they interpret the film and the factors that influence their perception of the anime's popularity, such as animation, narrative, and media influence. Using Stuart Hall's reception theory, this study explores the dominant, negotiating, and oppositional reading positions in interpreting the film's message. Applying a qualitative descriptive method by implementing in-depth interviews with six students selected by purposeful sampling from a total of 27 students who filled out the questionnaire. The results showed that the majority of informants were in a dominant position, receiving the film's message related to visual quality and emotional delivery positively. Conversely, there were two informants who occupied a negotiating position by acknowledging the quality of the film but criticizing certain narrative aspects. These findings reveal that students' backgrounds and personal experiences have a significant influence on how they understand and respond to this anime.
